![]() Although used to some extent in the Civil War, the Pettingill was fragile and never attained wide popularity. Two Englishmen named Harbey and Pennell made one to shoot cap-and-ball ammunition in 1853, and Pettingill patented one in this country in 1856 which was made in calibers up to.
